As I left the thrift store, I wondered what the owner thought of me. I had just spent about 90 minutes rifling through every CD he had (and he had a ton of them, I’d say several thousand), picked 5 of the strangest I could find, and paid a whole tenner for them. Among the CD racks, there was a high concentration of classical/folk, ambient/relaxation music, compilations (a lot of freebies from magazines, for instance), and popular music.

Not the weird yankovic

When American folk music is discussed, it’s usually about a crusty hippie with an acoustic guitar pretending to be a wily mountain man or maybe something to do with slavery. But, if you were to look for the local music scene in my neck of the woods at the turn of the 20th century, you’d see that everyone in town was oom-pah’ing to POLKA. Of course, it would be wrong to say polka is from America.

Here in the land of Austex and spiders, we call them op-shops (which is “opportunity shop”, invented in ye olden days to give an air of respectability to thrifting). The lovely ferdaywife is an avid op-shopper, and so the assignment for #thriftex went to her, with the only instructions being “something you’ve never heard of”. I say, close enough. Originally from Nelson, South Island NZ, in the early 90’s Stanley was in a group called World Gone Wild, playing upbeat The Cure inspired gothpop, and had a few minor hits in Oceania.

Ears Destroyed

There’s a Canadian record store chain called Sunrise Records. They started in the 70s and spread across Canada (especially the English-speaking parts). Like you would expect from a chain record store, most of the stuff they carry is new, label-released stuff, and stuff that doesn’t sell probably gets sent back. In the sleepy suburban town of Coquitlam, British Columbia, where I went to high school and my parents live, there is also one of their chains in every big mall.
