Comparisons are a privilege. You should only get to make them after a high-quality assessment of the thing itself. What is it? What is it trying to do? Does it do it? These are just some of what constitutes the bare minimum before the invocation of other, similar efforts, can be made. Of course, we’re all deeply unoriginal people, to the extent that some thinkers deny free will based on aesthetic unoriginality, you can only think the thoughts you have, so on and so forth.

Goldicot weakly dumps

Instead of listening to as many metal albums as I could find and picking three to lavish with praise, I spent the entire week listening to every single release featured on Can This Even Be Called Music’s essential roundup resource Weekly Release Dump on February 28th. CTEBCM reflects my eternal desire to listen to ever-weirder experimentation, yet habitually I skip over the vast majority of the roundup, paradoxically dubbing it all “not my thing”.

Mortal hubris of 3, never to 6

I can never decide if I should write about the stuff I like, or the stuff that’s actually interesting. Thankfully it was easy this week – everything was both. The end of February brought the quality out in full force, with one-off victor Scimitar, Seidhr, and Light Dweller, double winners for stalwart bulwark Dark Descent with Sepulchral Curse and Grave Infestation, and an insane quadruple winner for the best label out there, I, Voidhanger.

Ihsahn balls

I spend most of my time now thinking of thesis statements. With every blurb I write there’s two of them – the thesis of the album, often abstracted or obfuscated to the limits of legibility, and my thesis of response, just as obfuscated as the former, but always more confused, less certain of its legitimacy. Since writing is a form of art, and therefore a form of creation, it’s a bit like trying to create an artwork as a response to another artwork, and by doing so I risk not writing about the original subject at all, instead a rambling mental travelogue of my own, dumb, ass.
