As long as you avoided music released in 2022

The game has changed. I followed my own advice from last year and listened to even less current music and even more music from past years and I couldn’t be happier. I watched my vortex comrades commiserate as they forced themselves through yet another goregrind, business casual, drum ‘n’ bass release as I merrily ignored 2022. There are too many things I want to listen to, too many discogs to run, too many lists to peruse and waaaaaaay too many reliquary picks.

For that, I obviously decided to go through it in the most masochistic way. The heat at this year’s Bloodstock festival was scorching and incessant, much like Pupil Slicer’s grinding, eclectic -core based sound. Bloodstock, this year especially, was a tale of two cities; the traditional metal core of the festival seemed more abundant, and perhaps more uninspiring for my tastes, as ever, however the fresher -core core of young bands, mainly playing the tented second stage, presented something different. The beauty of a festival like Bloodstock is its ability to cater to every need.

I’ve been on a sludge kick recently, so there’s no better time than the present to dive into 2022 Vortexian sludge activity. Sludge confuses members of the Interdimensional Vortex of Conspiratorial Tastemaking and there is little in the way of a consensus. In the shadowy e-pages of a far distant Discord channel, users squabble and bicker over truth of sludge. What is sludge? Why is sludge? If there is a consensus in the pro-sludge camp - a smelly squadron in the community - it’s concerned with oppressiveness.
