Ghost - Impera

From the pinnacle to the pit

In my last review, I mentioned Ghost as an example of a simulacrum, an imitation or a reproduction of a previous work that is just different enough to make it appear fresh and original. I thought it suited Ghost well, as Tobias Forge doesn’t seem to consider his work as an homage to Blue Öyster Cult, Candlemass, Witchfinder General, etc.. but more as a revival of the style of those bands in each different album.

Heavy Metal is a genre strongly associated with the 80s. It has been played by so many bands, with so many different iterations, where so many great albums emerged; it leaves the impression that it’s impossible to be creative anymore in that style, especially in 2021. It’s probably the reason that a lot of new albums, or new heavy metal bands, are either a simulacrum of that period or just a plain copy.

Sydney’s Golden Fang are indie rock darlings with whom us Vortexers are intimately familiar. In 2020, Golden Fang released Here. Now Here., which placed #8 (out of 2,020 albums) on my year end list, where I said, “the songs are tight, the production is crisp, and Carl sounds better than ever.” My One Thousand Deaths buddy ferday had them at #9 (also out of 2,020 albums) and proclaimed it was the “#1 coffee bean cleanser in between shitty metal EP’s” and my fellow vortex factotum Dr.
