Sydney’s Golden Fang are indie rock darlings with whom us Vortexers are intimately familiar. In 2020, Golden Fang released Here. Now Here., which placed #8 (out of 2,020 albums) on my year end list, where I said, “the songs are tight, the production is crisp, and Carl sounds better than ever.” My One Thousand Deaths buddy ferday had them at #9 (also out of 2,020 albums) and proclaimed it was the “#1 coffee bean cleanser in between shitty metal EP’s” and my fellow vortex factotum Dr.

Cypress Hill – Black Sunday

Is that smoke I see over there ?

This was one of my first introductions to hip hop at around 8-9 years old. This, together with NWA, Tupac, and Snoop among others, was the coolest music I had heard, and I immediately had to get some baggy pants and way oversized t-shirts. I’m sure some of those clothes would still look big on me now in my 30s… Out of all hip hop I listened to, Cypress Hill always stood out.

You’re sitting by the doorway, looking at the land surrounding you. All is in decay. The crops are dying under the burning sun, everything is dry and desolate. But you see them coming, dark clouds looming at the horizon. They grow, swelling again and again, darkening the sky. Lightning strikes and rain is released on this desolate wasteland. You welcome the storm, regenerational for the bodies and the soil. Then it slowly stops and everything seems good for a while.

Nightwish Discog Run

A trip through their 25 year career

Nightwish are the world’s foremost symphonic metal band. I’ve been a fan since first hearing Once towards the end of the 2000s. This is my take on their 25 year, 9 studio album discography. Angels Fall First: Debut albums always seem to either be one of a band’s best or one of the weakest and rarely middling; for Nightwish it’s on the weak side. The album starts well with Elvenpath which is a good song and is followed by Beauty and the Beast which could be really good but doesn’t quite work, partly as Tuomas performs the male vocals and he’s not much of a singer.
